A very important part of the interview process for esports jobs is the cover letter, and it is often overlooked by recruits. This is what hiring managers look at to have a fair idea of who they are going to be dealing with, and a bad cover letter may reduce the chances of getting hired for esports jobs. For this piece we will be highlighting points to consider so you write cover letters that stand out

Salutation

Here you want to be as formal or personal as the company may present itself. Starting esports cover letters with “To whom it may concern” make them impersonal and unprofessional. You may want to consider the following examples:

Dear [Company/Recipient’s Name]

Dear Hiring Manager

Dear Sir/Madam

Other examples that may suffice include a simple “Hello” or “Greetings” if they are on a more informal level. The most important thing is to let your personality shine through the document.

Opening

The pointers to include for a captivating introduction should include: your excitement over the job, demonstrating your knowledge about the company as well as compliments, and end by stating you are the ideal candidate for the position.

A passionate introduction taking on this format or similar — “I was enlivened to see xyz and I did not hesitate to apply” — could show that you care for the job. To help with complimenting the company, you can look up their website and conduct a little research from social media posts, testimonials and milestones, or other agencies affiliated with them. You can end the paragraph by comparing their requirements with your experience and skills, showing them why you are the right pick. This will encourage the hiring manager to read on.

Body

This portion should have the elaboration of your introduction. If you have the needed requirements, you talk about your milestones and achievements from the experience you have had in the position or related to the job that you are applying for. If you do not have enough experience, talk about how your character traits make you the best fit for the role. What you want to keep in mind is that you are sticking to the role’s requirements so be sure you do not repeat yourself too much.

Conclusion

Just as your introduction should be strong, the same is required of your finishing statements. Express your passion for the role and the industry in general. Explain why your personality and interests align with the role, and reiterate why you believe you are the ideal candidate.

Sign-off

This portion should encourage action. “Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon” is good enough to end your cover letter. You look confident and do not come across as audacious.

Final touches

Use the same font and style as you may have done for your resume. Proofread your letter before you send it to check for any grammatical errors or repetitions. Having a friend or relative do this alongside can help with clarity and coherence. Save the document as a pdf and title it well eg. “Full Name — Cover Letter”

Using these steps you can create a compelling esports cover letter; one that can captivate hiring managers and land you the esports role you are so passionate about.
